Arrived promptly and in good condidtion, took a while to sort everything out but am very happy with the laptop. Lots of features I probably won't use and Windows 7 is really different to use but apart from that it's great !
battery pack May 30, 2010 mags 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
the battery pack did not work from the start - so I would have to constantly use the laptop plugged into the electric. No more are available in stock to replace, so I had to have a refund! Shame cos I really liked it.
Wow - am I lucky! May 12, 2010 T. Davies (N. Essex) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Ordered this from Amazon on Saturday with free delivery option. Arrived yesterday (Tuesday). I paid £489 and yesterday the price had gone up to £599! and today they are sold out so I count myself very lucky especially as the laptop is all I expected/wanted and more. Took the usual 40 mins or so to load Windows. Removed McCafee security suite and installed Microsoft Essentials security (free download) as recommended on Martin Lewis's web site. I also use Mozilla Firefox web browser and the Windows firewall - I don't beleive in paying for must-have software when there is plenty of free really good stuff available from the web. As Outlook Express is no longer available I tried the (free) Pegasus email client but could not get it working so gave up after about 3 hours and loaded (yes, you got it, free) Windows Mail Live from Microsoft and so far seems to work OK. OK, now to the laptop itself:
By the way, my 3 choices before deciding on this one included HP Pavilion dv6-2112sa and Sony VAIO VPCEB1E0E. All chosen for their tech spec and style. The Samsung won over because of it's bigger screen. This is a BIG laptop and feels really solid without being too heavy. The 17.3" screen is excellent (I'm not keen on the current screen technologies with high reflective glass but it seems that's all that's available today if you want a quality picture). The keyboard is "proper" sized with full numeric pad. The feel of the keys is really nice and should suit a touch typist (which I'm definitely NOT!). Personnaly I can't get on with these touch pads rather than mice so took the first opportunity to install an HP wireless mouse in matching red which is excellent - see seperate review. The hard disk is without doubt the quietest I have ever heard - I had to put my ear flat against the keyboard before I could just detect the HDD whirring away - excellent.
The one must-have thing for me was the wireless performance had to be good as this will be mostly used downstairs and my Broadband is located up one flight of stairs on the other side of the house. Having upgraded my router/ASDL modem earlier this year to a Belkin N (see separate review) I was determined to make sure whatever laptop I bought had to match. I can report that the wireless is brilliant with incredible speed when using the internet and with 4 out of 5 bars of signal strength. I've not had the laptop long enough to really test the battery but so far it seems to be very good. All in all I am very pleased (and so is my wife who will probably use it more than me!) with this product and thoroughly recommend it.
